Notes for Judson A. SMITH JR.
Our Grandpa Smith was a tall, wiry farmer with thin wispy hair who as I remember him, carried mint candies in his pockets for Jane, Norman and me. Occasionally we could spy a pint of alcohol in the hip pocket of his bib overalls. (We called them overhalls). He had a comfortable chair near the wood burner heater, smoking his pipe (or cigar) tapping the ashes into the open stove door. He was funny sometimes holding me on his lap, tapping his hand up my chest saying, “Here comes a mouse; here comes a mouse and it’s gonna get you !” Norman and I were close cousins on Grandpa and Grandma’s‘s farm occasionally going for walks to the neighbors’ house, usually to the Kunde place behind the fields. Hours later we would return and met Grandpa’s wrath. Norman got the first whuppin’ while I cried real loud and was spared my punishment. Grandpa also read a lot, including the Zane Grey stories. He had a fine herd of Hereford cows, large in size. The colors were liver and white and were excellent milkers. We feared the huge bull, in a separate pen, used to breed them! Four heavy work horses also graced the barn and fields. August, 2007: Copies made from Bible entries that Caroline E-mailed to Dale showed death records that J.A. Smith wrote in his handwriting by pen are as follows: “ Jennie L. Smith died October 13, 1875, Stillwater, Minn. Judson A. Smith, Sr. died Dec 12, 1885 at Stillwater, Minn. , Mariah J. Smith died May 3rd 1893 at Stillwater, Minn.” Warren J. Smith’s wife, Lucy, made all the subsquent entries in her handwriting.
