Notes for Nellie Bly WHEELER
Grandma Nelle was a quiet lady and a kind, talented person in the kitchen especially; putting her needs after she served everyone else. Could knit her family’s grey socks without even looking at her moving needles. She sewed her own floorlength dresses and coverall aprons, too. I was only about 7 years old when she passed away, being too young to attend funerals, I still remember the sadness that hung over Dad, Mother and Jane for weeks afterwards. They planted bridal wreath bushes at her grave site and probably yellow rose bushes, too as she dearly loved spring blooms. Jane and I were her chicken feed spreaders and egg gatherers. It was fun seeing her new little chicks grow into laying hens. They would dip their beaks into a round tray on which a jar full of water was tipped upside down upon the tray. The roosters were not my favorite farm life, however.
but Norman & I could run faster than they. They were Rhode Island Reds.
