Notes for Jewett W. WHEELER
In my collection of newspaper clipping copies, there is an article stating the accident he had while corn picking, losing his right arm. My father told us that he remembers sitting on his Grandfather’s lap and looking at his long beard. I have no references to Grandma Wheeler’s personal life. Uncle Ernest and Aunt Franc lived on the Wheeler farm .Years later after living there with Walter, Hazel and Lyle, Uncle Ernest suffered a stroke and died. Grandpa Wheeler was a shrewd business man farming many acres and raising vegetables to sell door to door to families living in Stillwater. Over the years he accumulated 24 houses that he rented. Nelle and Frances inherited them and kept some of them. I remember one particularly on West Maple St. My father and mother spent weeks cleaning the house after renters moved out. It needed lots of scouring! Such as hauling bushels of ashes fom the kitchen floor and sterilizing the springs and mattresses in each bedroom plus scrubbing all the floors.Gr. Granda Wheeler planted in a field near Big Twin lake potatoes which were in demand. Per John Burtzlaff. (3-28-07) Also he said that he was a very good gardener.
