Notes for Betsey ARNOLD
Even tho’ we are unable to find a connection to Benedict Arnold through our Betsey, I want to put his history herewith: Born in Norwich on Jan 14,1741, B.A. attended school in Canterbury until his family began experiencing financial problems. He worked as a apprentice to his cousins and for brief periods joined the Army betw. the mid-1750’s & the early 1760 ‘s during the French & Indian War. He became a captain in the Gov.s 2nd Co. of Gu ards, before the official outbreak of the Revol utionar y War. and became involved in the battles of Lexington & Concord. That was when he clashed with Ethan Allen’s Green Mountain Boys. It was the 1st of numerous episodes of contempt & anger betw. Arnold and fellow officers dur. his military career.( He was denied a promotion) By May 1779, he was negotiating with the British military. He was offered land in Canada, a Pension for his wife & children, a military commission & money. In 1781Arnold led the British in the burning of New London and the assault on Groton Heights. He died in 1801after fleeing with his family to London.
